Here is my face. |
If you're looking to know more about what this site is for, then you should be clicking here. If you're on this page to find out more about the odd human behind this blog, then you are in the right place. This is not a brief summary, by any means - you'll soon discover that I'm an extremely wordy person!
My name is Evelyn, and I grew up in the overcrowded but completely lovable city of Hong Kong (which, by the way is not a tiny underdeveloped island community of the coast of Japan! The number of time I have had to explain this.......tsk tsk). I live in a dusty old apartment in the busy city, and not much aggravates me more than hearing the train rumble loudly past my window at 5AM, but I love it to bits anyway.
Despite having lived here all my life, my only language I speak fluently is English, because I grew up going to international schools, which are basically tiny gated communities of education. Now that I'm out in the 'real world', I am eternally confused about my cultural identity in this city, despite it being a fairly international place to live. My Cantonese is mediocre, to say the least; I probably speak more Spanish, seeing as it is my major.
Ah, yes, speaking of which, I'm currently in my final year at university, studying Comparative Literature and Spanish - yes, I realise this is a rather unusual and incredibly specific combination of studies, and honestly, I half regret it, but it's a little too late for that now.
I'm not particularly outgoing in the broadest sense of the word. I can certainly play it off like I'm extremely confident about myself, because one thing I am able to do is to laugh at myself and find humor in most things. I talk pretty loudly and in big chunks, so it does come across as though I have no problem talking to people, but I honestly don't really know what I'm on about half the time! But hey, my social awkwardness seems to amuse people, so I suppose it works in my favour.
Anyway, I grew up in a family of very kinesthetic people; both my parents are in the engineering business, and generations of my dad's side of the family have been, too. My mum is the more crafty one, and loves to take on small projects around the house, which I suppose is what sparked my interest in it from a young age, too. I love walking through hardware and craft shops and just picturing in my head what I could do with all those bolts, screwdrivers, spray paint, pieces of sandpaper....yes, my parents think I'm a bit of an odd child, too.
Hobbies include:
MUSIC:
By that, I mean in all aspects. I grew up in a very music-loving household; my dad always listened to folk rock from the 70's and my nanny loved the Billboard hits from the 80's and 90's, and all three of those categories are my favourite to this day. I learned to play piano when I was five (way to jump on the bandwagon of Asian stereotypes...), and began to teach myself to play guitar when I was 9. My main instrument though, is singing. I love it, and while I'm not terribly good at it, it's something that made me feel like I was a part of something, especially in high school.
READING:
I kid you not; if I had the choice, I would turn my entire (hypothetical) apartment into a library. I have enough books to fill half of my parents' place right now if it weren't for the fact that there are four of us and furniture is necessary, but most of my books are sitting in large cardboard boxes in storage because I couldn't fit it all into what bookshelf space I do have right now. I keep my favourite ones on my desk at all times. I find it incredibly enjoyable to spend my weekends and holiday months just curled up in bed just reading all day. I'm a bit sneaky sometimes, actually - because of my major, I often have to buy books anyway, so whenever I do go and buy books for class, I sneak in one or two books purely for my own pleasure; my mum writes them off as an academic expense...yes, I'm terrible.
SOCIAL NETWORKING AND ONLINE WINDOW SHOPPING:
Anyone who knows me in real life will know that I am someone who cannot do without WiFi for more than 12 hours. I'm not the anti-social jerk that is constantly on their phone when they're supposed to be hanging out with their friends, but if I'm on the train or just alone in public in general, I will be glued to checking my numerous email accounts, social media notifications, or messaging friends on LINE and Whatsapp. I don't like my phone terribly much, it's kind of outdated and crappy, but it still works and I suppose that's a good a reason as any to hold on getting a new one. When I'm not on my phone, I'm on my trusty MacBook. It's a little insane, but I can spend up to 15 hours a day just surfing the net! It's a time-consuming activity; reading blog updates, updating my own blog, scrolling through Facebook, Twitter, checking my email, watching Ellen on Youtube, fangirling on Tumblr, looking a things I can't afford on Amazon - oh whoops, there goes my day.
WRITING:
I suppose that's why I started this blog in the first place. I do have various other blogs that aren't so focused on specific categories, but I just like putting my thoughts and experiences in writing, even if I'm not terribly good at it. I'm not particularly artful with my words, but I love the satisfaction of being able to have some sort of record of what I'm thinking, feeling, or simply enjoying at a certain point. Right now, though, I really want to be able to combine all my hobbies and passions into one thing and share with other people who might find it useful, or amusing, at the least.

Other things you should know about me:
- I spell things the British way because that's just how I was taught, so bear with me if you're more accustomed to Americanisms.
- I really like llamas <--- (Oh, really now......)
The purpose of Llama At Home is a way for me to make a record of all the crafty/lifestyle things that I do and share them with other people who might find them useful. I don't claim myself to be a professional interior designer/architect, nor do I have any sort of proper experience with food, beauty, or...anything, for that matter. I live a life of mediocrity and learn from it. In a sense, I suppose this blog is more like a sharing of trial and errors.
WHY "LLAMA AT HOME"?
I....just....I really like llamas. They are awesome creatures, and while I have never seen one in person, I know that they are very friendly, intelligent and curious animals that learn things very quickly. And that's how I would like to see myself and how I strive to be in everything I do. Yes, I just told you that I would like to be a llama.
WHAT KIND OF POSTS DO YOU...WELL, POST?
It differs with what I've been doing in that particular period of time, really. Sometimes I'll just do a how-to post on something that I find is pretty nifty, or perhaps a review/comparison, and sometimes, just a blog on what I've been doing around the house lately. Like I said, most of what I do is trial and error, so there isn't really a specific formula that I follow for anything.
HOW CAN I CONTACT YOU?
Well, I don't why in the world you would actually want to talk to me, but I'm more than happy to! Links to my social networks are in the little round icons at the top of the page, or you can pop me an email at llamaathome@gmail.com (:
